We are The Stance, an indie band from East Yorkshire, and this is our story so far!

Made up of four passionate musicians: Jaz Hancox (lead singer), Calum Garnett (lead guitarist), Zack Waite (bass player), and Tommy Drury (drummer), The Stance looks move beyond cover sets and share original music with the world.

Although this is a fresh chapter for them, the band members music journey started very early on. Starting as Hats-off, they performed across Hull and East Yorkshire, offering well-loved covers at private venues and festivals. Although having the opportunity to preform music written by incredible artists and seeing people dance to their renditions, they felt something was missing. This is when they decided to become the Stance, offering original music, while throwing in some old-time favourites.

This may explain the reason why the Stance was formed, but it does not share how they were formed, not only as a band but became best mates. It all began in 2008, when Calum and Jaz met in primary school. As childhood best friends, they discovered their shared love of music, learnt guitar together and with the support of their teacher Jo Brown, formed their first band, at just seven years old. Jo is still massive support and 13 years later remains hugely involved with the band. Throughout their school years, Jaz and Calum played in different bands, branching out their musical ability and expanding their musical genres. In 2020, a big decision was made, with Jaz and Calum wanting to create their own original music, not just perform other people’s. That’s when they started looking for the right musicians to turn their dream into reality.

Along came Tommy. During lockdown, Jaz became friends with Tommy through social media, who shared the same love of music and enjoyed crashing the cymbals. Later that year, the now band of three were fortunate enough to find the Stances’ incredible bassist, Zack, who was also discovered through musical connections.

As soon as lockdown restrictions lifted, they got straight to work, rehearsing relentlessly to shape their unique sound. To achieve this unique sound each member of the band brings their own ideas to the table and work together to create music which is relatable to what many face in life. Although all members of the Stance work together to produce their music, Jaz is the primary songwriter, writing their first tracks; Braver Than You Think, Need You Now, and debut single, Home.

So, this is The Stance. Calum’s passion and musicianship, Jaz’s songwriting and leadership, Zack’s wisdom and talent, and Tommy’s dedication to music (and legendary dad jokes!) make up the heart of our band. We are four friends chasing a dream—to sell out stadiums, to share our music with the world, and to create something that truly resonates.
